Cullasaja Club

There are very few addresses in the mountains of western North Carolina that carry the weight of Cullasaja Club. Set at 4,250 feet across 680 acres of the Nantahala National Forest boundary in Highlands, it is a community that has drawn families for nearly four decades, and it is nearly fully built. The name Cullasaja comes from the Cherokee, meaning sweet water, a reference to the cold, clear streams that run through the property and converge in three natural waterfalls within the community's boundaries. Cullasaja's Architectural Review Committee has maintained a clear and consistent vision since the community turned fully private by invitation in 2000: homes should integrate with the landscape rather than impose upon it. That means natural materials, restrained massing, and the kind of craftsmanship that reads as belonging to this elevation rather than transplanted from somewhere else.

In practical terms, it means stone, timber, and standing seam metal roofing that ages well under the mountain's hundred-inch-plus annual rainfall. It is not a development that is still figuring out what it wants to be. It is fully realized, and the families who build here understand what they are joining.
