Country Club of Sapphire Valley

The Country Club of Sapphire Valley is one of the oldest club communities in the North Carolina mountains, founded in 1956 by Gene Howerdd Sr., who had grown up with Augusta National and understood what a well-conceived mountain club could become. Since 1983, the club has been fully member-owned, giving it a stability and continuity of character that newer communities can take years to develop. We have built here for clients who value that depth of place.

Positioned five to seven miles east of Cashiers in the Sapphire Valley, the community occupies a different landscape than the higher elevations of Cullasaja or Pinchot. The valley character here is gentler, with the George Cobb par-72 golf course notable for its remarkable walkability, carrying less than 30 feet of total elevation change across 6,859 yards. The 32,000-square-foot clubhouse, completed in 2005, anchors a full amenity campus with four tennis courts, six pickleball courts, and two croquet courts.

Sub-Communities and Their Characters

What many buyers new to the area do not immediately realize is that the Country Club of Sapphire Valley encompasses several distinct residential neighborhoods, each with its own character and scale. Golf Club Estates, with 106 homesites, is the most established and golf-proximate. Stonecreek Crossing, with 19 lots, offers a smaller, more intimate setting. Sassafras Ridge, 30 lots across 259 acres, provides the largest homesites and the greatest separation from club activity.

Understanding which sub-community best fits a client's priorities, whether that is proximity to the clubhouse, lot size, topographic character, or price point, is one of the first conversations we have with families considering Sapphire Valley. These are not interchangeable, and the building approach for a Sassafras Ridge estate and a Golf Club Estates home can differ considerably.

Building in the Valley

The valley elevation at Sapphire presents different building conditions than the higher communities on the plateau. Drainage through the valley floor requires attention, particularly on lots adjacent to Horsepasture River tributaries, and the topographic variation across the 259 acres of Sassafras Ridge means that ridge homesites there are genuinely elevated with long views, even if the overall community sits lower than neighboring Cullasaja or Mountaintop.
